After the news broke that the Orioles had traded their former closer Jim Johnson to the A’s for Jemile Weeks and what eventually wound up being David Freitas many fans wondered who would close out games for the O’s in 2014?
That question is apparently now answered with the inking of Grant Balfour to a two year deal worth about $15 million. This move only saves the Orioles approximately $2.5 million per year over signing Jim Johnson for his reported asking price of around $10mil/per season.
That money will have to go into signing players like Chris Davis and Matt Wieters to contract extensions should the Orioles want to pursue those avenues. It also helps that the $10mil/season that Brian Roberts was getting over the past four seasons has also come off the books. Roberts has recently signed with the New York Yankees on a 1 year deal worth around $2 million. Sad to see him go, but it was time.
